A Glass of Water

The first thing we do each morning when we wake —
seven billion of us drink a glass of water.
Water enters the body and gives life its breath.
And to that water, we say "thank you."
Seven billion "thank you"s echo across the earth.
Thank you, thank you, thank you.
The water planet, the planet of life, comes back to life.
A beautiful earth means beautiful water;
a lively life means delicious water.

Sometimes, play with life.
Look up at the sky, and speak with the heavens.
Surrender yourself to the great flow —
the flow of clouds, the flow of rivers, the flow of wind.
Listen to the sound of flowing.
There is a moment that connects with life.

The Absolute Moment

There is such a moment.
Earth, water, fire and wind melt into one.
Chance, too, connects to necessity.
The instant and the eternal overlap.
Born in that moment —
and it begins.

The Messenger Who Appeared from the World of Water

Two missions, entrusted by the world of water.
This figure, which emerged from within the flow of the river —

1. Why does it take human form?
2. What is it crying out, with its mouth open wide?

To think through these questions with people around the world through exhibitions, and to bring the answers into being — that is my mission. This is the "Prayer for Water" exhibition.

Voices

The Brahma Sound, the Sound of the Ocean Tide

Voices
Mr. Shigetomi's "Ryusuimon" are mysterious works born of casting away the self and becoming one with the flow of water. That they bring forth the shifting shadow of a rushing current, resonating with water's own sacred song, must be because they carry within them the memory of water. I was reminded of Raimon Panikkar's words: a person is a drop of water; God is water itself.
Setsuko Klossowska de Rola
Voices
"The Brahma Sound, the Sound of the Ocean Tide" — the primal sound of the universe. The faint, thunderous sound of the earth circling the sun. One feels as if that very tone might be heard.
Kōchō Nishimura, Buddhist sculptor
Voices
By adding a single drop of ink to flowing water, Mr. Shigetomi captures the "Ryusuimon" — the many forms that arise — and completes them as works of art. The patterns that appear within them sometimes take the very shape of a dragon, or seem like a dragon deity grieving over the impurities of this world. Why is it that such intricate forms, beyond human understanding, come to appear?
Mori Seihan, Chief Priest of Otowasan Kiyomizu-dera
Ground

Voices of the Tide — Earth

When you become a root, you can become still
When you become a root, you can become still

A root, quietly nourished, grows large and strong with time. The nutrients feeding the trunk, branches, and spreading leaves are all supplied from that root. What shows above the ground is forever swayed by the air, but the root beneath the soil does not waver. Because the root is never in view, it has no need to flatter anyone.

There is a Tao that connects heaven and earth
There is a Tao that connects heaven and earth

Nature repeats destruction and creation endlessly. This is nature's own will, seeking to build order out of chaos. Human beings, who are kept alive within that nature, likewise repeat destruction and creation within themselves. These are not separate forms of consciousness, but energy arising from the very same source.

Water

Voices of the Tide — Water

The heart is still, like a deep pool
The heart is still, like a deep pool

When water gathers fully in a pond, it grows quietly clear from the depths, then overflows and runs on to the next low place. The heart, too, becomes still when it is filled with contentment. It is filled when it knows that the self is connected to heaven and earth.

Entrust yourself to the great flow
Entrust yourself to the great flow

Water flows vast and clear, flowing on pleasantly. The way it flows resembles the form of everything that flows. The flow of time, too, wraps around the universe and flows on, neither good nor bad. Since there is no resisting that flow, it is better to surrender to it completely.

Wind

Voices of the Tide — Wind

Listen to the primal sound of the universe
Listen to the primal sound of the universe

The earth spins on its axis and orbits the sun. Its speed is 30 kilometers per second, ninety times the speed of sound — and within that, there is sound. A faint, thunderous sound. The air moves, stirring wind, giving rise to water. Animals, plants, and minerals alike weave that natural balance into forms of pure spirit.

Touch the Tao, and true vitality fills you
Touch the Tao, and true vitality fills you

Where is the home of my own life? When I turn my thoughts to the origin of life, it seems to lie far away, beyond the universe — but it seems to be hiding right here, in the shadow of things. I turn over a leaf. There it is — a ladybug, a butterfly larva, breathing. We are all the same; they live eating the same things I do.

Fire

Voices of the Tide — Fire

Connected to the way of the Tao, one is full of vitality, and gentle
Connected to the way of the Tao, one is full of vitality, and gentle

If you can come to know the workings of the Tao in your own body, the power of kindness begins to sprout within you. The power of kindness is always fresh, resilient, and great. Treat the things of the natural world gently, and let one another live.

Hear the sound of light and color resonating together
Hear the sound of light and color resonating together

Light falls, and color is born. Color is reborn through light. Nature exists through relationships in which each lets the other live, and when each has lived as fully as it can, a sound can be heard — each praising the other. Thank you . . .

Une belle terre, c'est une eau belle ;

Mori Seihan, grand prêtre d'Otowasan Kiyomizu-dera
Terre

Merci…
